People ready to adopt and curious visitors can cuddle and play with the freewheeling cats, and learn more about the cats than they would in a traditional shelter setting. To see our adoption policies, click here.

This helps to promote a greater number of adoptions into good homes for the cats, and allows for better matches of human and cat personalities.

visiting us

When you visit, please allow plenty of time to spend with the cats in our adoption center. Looks aren't everything, and you'll want time to see their personalities. The sleepy cat on the corner of the couch may want to play a game, with just a little coaxing from you. The disinterested cat on the windowsill may be secretly longing to be petted by you, and a little sweet talk might just convince him.

The names of our cats are written on their collars. As you might guess, the pink collars are the girl cats, and the blue collars are the boy cats, just in case you have a preference. We ask all visitors in our adoption center to be sensitive to our cats' needs. Some of the cats may have just arrived, and some may be fearful of their new surroundings. Some may never have been in the company of so many other cats before, and may feel uncertain.

Some may never have been around children before, and will be unfamiliar with their voices and behavior. We ask our visitors to be quiet and gentle with our cats, and to monitor their children closely. Toddlers and babies must be carried or held on laps.Children may not run or make a lot of noise. If your children are loud or crying or misbehaving, we may ask you to take them outside.

where are the cats from?

Our cats come from other shelters, municipal animal control facilities, rescue groups, and from the public. Surrenders are by appointment only. Please telephone in advance to learn about our veterinary and financial requirements for surrendering a cat. For most of the year, we will not have kittens in our adoption center. The kittens in the SPCA shelters are often adopted before the adult cats, so the kittens don't need our help as much. However, during the height of the kitten season from April to September, there are so many kittens brought into the SPCA shelters, that there isn't enough room for them all, and some are euthanized. Kitty Cottage may bring some kittens into our adoption center during kitten season.

The annual flood of kittens demonstrates the urgency of spaying and neutering every cat and every kitten that's over a few months old. Cute little kittens in the SPCA's do not always get adopted. In addition, hundreds of adults cats are euthanized every day in the Greater Philadelphia area shelters, because there aren't enough adoptions to make room for all the new cats that are turned in. Kitty Cottage encourages people to adopt adult cats. Their wonderful personalities and quirky little habits are already formed, so you can really choose a cat just right for you! Some kittens' personalties change as they mature, so the lively, bouncing kitten you choose could become a quiet, retiring adult, or the shy kitten you liked that was hiding behind the plant, might grow up into an incurable rascal!
